The Acc

November 18, 2005|By HEATHER A. DINICH

Coach: Dave Leitao, first season at school, sixth overall (80-69)

2004-05 record: 14-15, 4-12 (tied for 10th in ACC)

Returning starters: Sophomore G Sean Singletary, junior G T.J. Bannister, junior G J.R. Reynolds

Sun prediction: Losing record

Why it will happen: Leitao inherited a team that hasn't had a winning record in the ACC in the past four seasons and hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2001. Billy Campbell, the team's lone senior, didn't start any games last year. It's a mystery who is going to generate the frontcourt offense, as no returning forward or center scored more than 4.2 points per game last season.

Why it might not: Singletary brings experience to the point guard position that's lacking throughout the conference, as Chris Paul (Wake Forest), Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Jarrett Jack (Georgia Tech) and John Gilchrist (Maryland) all chose to enter the NBA draft. Singletary averaged 10.5 points, 3.9 assists and 3.0 rebounds last season.
