100 stops a day keeps UPS man fit

How he started: Before working for UPS, Redditt was a mailman for about eight months. He began at UPS unloading airplanes at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, which he did for about five months. He then began driving part time for UPS and was hired full time a little more than three years ago.

Typical day: Redditt begins his day just after 8 a.m. at the UPS facility on Joh Avenue in Baltimore. His truck is loaded for him when he arrives and is organized according to his route. A hand-held computer tells him where each package is going and where on the truck it was placed. Redditt is a cover driver, which means he fills in and works any one of about nine routes in downtown Baltimore. He mainly delivers to businesses and says he averages 100 to 130 stops per day. When he returns for the day, he unloads any packages and ends his day about 6:30 p.m.

Strangest delivery: Snakes, lizards and other reptiles.

The good: "I work for a good company. We have excellent benefits here, and that's a plus."

The bad: "When you see the same packages over and over again." Redditt says he has three attempts to deliver a package. After that he leaves a notice that a package is waiting.

The numbers: UPS in Maryland delivers almost 300,000 packages and documents daily using 1,950 delivery vehicles. UPS services more than 60,000 customers and has almost 7,000 employees in Maryland.

On driving: Redditt says he drives about 30 to 40 miles a day and has learned to become a skilled defensive driver. UPS trains drivers for two weeks. They then have two days of driving with a supervisor. "They take the time to make sure you're comfortable before you go out," Redditt says.

The workout: "This job keeps you in shape because you are exercising all day long."

Extracurriculars: "I like my music," says Redditt, who plays drums and enjoys listening to jazz and rhythm and blues.
