After reaching the championship game in its first trip to the state tournament in 1999, the Eastern Tech girls soccer team had since been frustrated with three of its past four seasons ending in the semifinal round.

Not anymore.

Opportunistic and precise on their finishes, the Mavericks jumped out fast and never looked back in coming away with a 3-0 win over Reservoir in last night's Class 2A state semifinal at Atholton.

And with the win, the Mavericks will get their second chance at a state title when they meet Middletown from Frederick County - a 1-0 winner over Parkside in the other semifinal - in the championship game at UMBC. Date and time have yet to be determined.

The Mavericks got all the scoring they would need and more in the first half and it came in a hurry. In the third minute, senior midfielder Cindi Nickles got behind the Gators defense and went high with a shot from 15 yards for a 1-0 lead.

They made it 2-0 just before the midway point of the half when freshman forward Rachel Trageser finished off a chance in front. Junior Stephanie Horchar scored Eastern Tech's third goal.glenn.graham@baltsun.com
