An unidentified man was fatally shot last night on a residential street bordering Baltimore's Wyman Park, near the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus.

About 8:30 p.m., residents of the 3700 block of Tudor Arms Ave. called police and reported hearing gunshots coming from the corner of their street at Craycombe Avenue, said Sgt. Richard H. Petrey of the homicide squad.

Northern District officers found the man lying face up and dead next to a small tree and near a rowhouse. He appeared to have been shot in the upperpart of the body, and at least two empty shell casings from a handgun were found near the body.

Petrey said residents who saw the man's body before it was covered did not recognize the victim. Petrey said the man did not appear to be a student. "We don't think he was from this neighborhood."

The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy and possible identification through fingerprints.
