Jurors OK death in Pr. George's case

November 11, 2005|By MATTHEW DOLAN

A Prince George's County man should die for killing the son of a Washington police officer, a federal jury in Greenbelt announced yesterday. Jurors recommended a death sentence for Kenneth Jamal Lighty, 23, of Hillcrest Heights, after he was convicted of the Jan. 3, 2002, kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old Eric Larry Hayes II. The recommendation needs the approval of U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte, who will sentence Lighty in February. Evidence showed that three people, including Lighty, abducted Hayes in Washington and drove him to Prince George's County. Hayes was pistol-whipped and shot in the face, head and legs.
