Last year -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. won for the second year in a row in a race that was held a week earlier than normal. Earnhardt pulled away from Jeff Gordon during two overtime laps to move up two positions to third place in the standings. Eventual series champion Kurt Busch left Phoenix with a 41-point lead over Gordon in the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Of the drivers in this season's top 5, Jimmie Johnson finished sixth in Phoenix last year, Tony Stewart was eighth, Carl Edwards 37th, Greg Biffle 13th and Mark Martin 15th.

Drivers to watch -- With two races remaining in this season, Stewart holds a 38-point lead over Johnson. Stewart won the Phoenix race in 1999, while Johnson has never won at the track. No driver has more than two wins in Phoenix - Earnhardt is tied with Jeff Burton and Davey Allison. Ryan Newman holds the qualifying record. This is the first season Phoenix will host two races; Busch won the inaugural spring race at the track in April.

Quotable -- "We can win the championship on racing and not have to count on bad luck on anybody's behalf." - Johnson, who finished fifth yesterday to remain second in the standings
