Assessment-tests session is Tuesday

The education committee of the Howard County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in partnership with Howard County schools, will sponsor H.S.A. Night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Pisgah AME Church, 5901 Cedar Fern Court, Columbia.

Parents and middle and high school students are encouraged to attend to prepare for the high school assessment tests required for graduation by the state.

School-boundaries meeting set Tuesday

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public hearing on proposed attendance-area adjustments for elementary and middle schools for the 2006-2007 school year.

The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City. The board welcomes public participation.

The board will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday in the boardroom at the Department of Education.

The afternoon session and an evening session, which is to start at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Sign-up in advance is preferred.

During the evening session, the board will hold a public hearing on a proposal to exchange 14 acres east of Laurel Woods Elementary School for about 20 acres of Recreation and Parks land adjacent to Bushy Park Elementary School. The additional land near Bushy Park could be used to expand the school.

Recreation and Parks would like to use the land next to Laurel Woods for a park.

SAT prep course set at Centennial

The Centennial High School PTSA will sponsor two sessions of an SAT prep course covering math and critical reading. The sessions are being held Tuesday through Jan. 17. The first session will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; the second, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Completion of geometry is required. The courses will be taught by Marian McCain, a former Centennial High School mathematics teacher.

The course is geared for the Jan. 28 test.

The cost is $390, and a portion is donated to the PTSA. Classes are limited to 15 students. Forms are available in the school's guidance office, or visit

Test-anxiety class to start Nov. 14

Registration is open for the Sressless Tests Program's "Reducing Test Anxiety" course, scheduled to begin Nov. 14.

The four-session class is designed to improve performance on a variety of tests. It will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 14 through Dec. 5.

The Columbia Association's Columbia Teen Center is accepting registration for its After School Enrichment Program for those ages 9 to 18.
