Fashioning a Victorian tea party

Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park will hold a Victorian Tea and 19th Century Fashion Show, with music, at 3 p.m. today. Afternoon tea will be served by hostesses in period dress in the early Victorian parlors of the institute's Mount Ida Visitor Center. The halls and parlors display furnishings, art and garments appropriate to the Patapsco Female Institute, a 19th-century girls school.

The cost is $25 a person. Proceeds will help with program costs at the park. Mount Ida Visitor Center is at 3691 Sarah's Lane, Ellicott City.

`Sound of Music' at Mount Hebron

Mount Hebron High School will present The Sound of Music at 7 p.m. Nov. 16, 17, 18 and 19 in the school's new cushion-seated auditorium.

Centennial presents `Guys and Dolls'

The Centennial High School production of Guys and Dolls will be held Nov. 17, 18, 19 at 7:30 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled the 19th.

SHOP to discuss drug coverage

Representatives of the Howard County Office on Aging's Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program will lead a discussion on the new Medicare prescription drug coverage program at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road.

A representative from Social Security Administration will discuss the "Extra Help" provision of the coverage and take applications.

The program will be offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia.

Emory United holds luncheon Tuesday

Emory United Methodist Church, 3799 Church Road, Ellicott City, will hold its annual "Election (or not) Day Luncheon, Bake Sale and Bazaar Table" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Admission is $7 for adults; $3.50 for children ages 6 and older. Children to age 6 eat for free. Carry-out is $7. Valet parking will be available.

Proceeds will benefit local and global missions.

Holiday Mart slated for Dec. 3

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks' Holiday Mart, featuring hand-crafted gifts by more than 125 artisans, will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at Centennial High School, 4300 Centennial Lane.

The Centennial Madrigal Singers will perform at 10 a.m. Food will be available for purchase.

Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for children ages 3-12.

Elkridge library to hold story time

The Elkridge Branch Library is continuing its "Just For Me" story time program, for children ages 3-5, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesdays, through Nov. 16.

Breakfast -- The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department will hold its all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road. 410-313-4901.

Driver education -- The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor a driver-education course from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. weekdays, tomorrow to Nov. 18. Driving time is scheduled separately, after the classroom sessions are completed. The cost is $375 and includes the classes and on-road training. Students must be at least 15 years old and have a learner's permit before taking the practical part of the course. The course is open to everyone. Top Driver Inc. Bridge, pinochle -- Kiwanis Wallas Recreation Center will offer free drop-in bridge sessions from 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and pinochle sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Blue and gray -- The Elkridge library will hold a Veterans Day program, "Old Men in Blue and Gray: Maryland's Civil War Veterans," at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elkridge Senior Center, 6540 Washington Blvd. Local author and historian Daniel C. Toomey will give a slide presentation about veterans organizations of the Union and Confederate armies in Maryland; he will show uniforms, badges and reunion memorabilia. Registration is encouraged.
