Despite dominating the game in every statistical category, No. 7 Liberty needed a goal by Billy Lee followed by a game-ending save by Robert Hollasch to pull out a win over visiting Winters Mill on penalty kicks after 100 scoreless minutes last night in a Class 2A West region semifinal.

Lee was the last of three goal scorers for the Lions in the penalty-kick session, beating Falcons goalie Matt Schultz high and to his left. Hollasch then blocked a drive sent directly at him by Winters Mill's David Schultz to preserve the win.

"He approached the ball and I figured he was going to go to my right, then at the last second he came back," said Hollasch. "I figured there's no way he can put it all the way in the corner on me. I'll stay still and see where he puts it."

The Lions (12-0-3) advanced to the regional final, in which they will face the winner of tonight's game between Century and Rockville. They are attempting to win their region for the third time since 2002.

The final outcome was a bit too close for comfort for Liberty coach Ed DeVincent, whose team failed to score in regulation and two overtimes despite outshooting Winters Mill, 34-7, including 30 of the first 34 shots.

"If we would have lost this game, this would have been the toughest loss of my career, by far," said DeVincent, in his 10th season. "The longer that game was tied, the longer I was thinking that it was going to be a fluke goal and we were going to get beat, 1-0. Their keeper made four or five just outstanding saves, and there are some balls that we've been finishing all year that we did not finish tonight."

Matt Schultz finished with 16 saves for the Falcons (8-3-3).
