Kenwood mistake lifts C.M. Wright

Girls soccer

For the C. Milton Wright girls soccer team, the pivotal minute of yesterday's Class 4A North region semifinal at Kenwood, at the midway point of the second half, was a case of making something happen with pressure.

For the host Bluebirds, it was plain old bad luck.

A miscommunication in the back by Kenwood resulted in an own goal, and it turned out to be the only goal as the No. 7 Mustangs advanced to the region final with a 1-0 win.

The Mustangs improve to 12-2 and will meet Sherwood for the region title, while the No. 5 Bluebirds see a fine season close out with a 11-2-2 mark.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Kolb had 11 saves; fellow senior Erin Rawlick played a solid game in the middle and the Mustangs accomplished what they set out to do, albeit unconventionally.

Looking to attack up the middle, Chelsie McNeil sent a ball up high that way which Greta Houlihan looked to chase down in the penalty area. A Kenwood defender got there just ahead of her and intended to head the ball back to keeper Amanda Jenkins. But Jenkins had left her goal line and the ball went in.

"We felt where we could score was to really provide pressure up top and that's how we scored," said Mustangs coach Paul Austin.

No. 12 North Harford 1, No. 2 Severna Park 1 -- The Hawks upset the perennial powerhouse, winning the shootout, 4-2. The Hawks will travel to River Hill Tuesday for the 3A East regional final.

No. 6 River Hill 1, No. 3 Centennial 0 -- Sara Tankard scored on a turnover in the 15th minute for the visiting Hawks (14-2) in 3A East.

Sherwood 2, No. 9 Perry Hall 1 -- Leilani Halkiotas scored to lift the Warriors (14-2) to the 4A North region finals.

No. 14 Chesapeake-AA 3, Old Mill 1 -- Kristen Milligan's rebound goal over the goalie started the host Cougars (13-3-1). They will play Broadneck in the 4A East region final on Tuesday.

No. 15 Eastern Tech 5, Lansdowne 0 -- Courtney Kobal scored twice as the host Mavericks (7-2-1) reached the 2A North final.

Towson 3, Patapsco 1 -- Emily Franke, Julie Cavanaugh and Holly Ziegler scored as the host Generals (8-5-1) advanced to the 4A North finals Tuesday.

Sparrows Point 2, Poolesville 1 -- Kristen Collison's two assists led the host Pointers (13-2) over the Indians (11-2-1) in a 1A South game.

Oakland Mills 2, Calvert 0 -- Bali Boule's goal and assist took the Scorpions to the 2A South final.
