A statewide carpenters union endorsed Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley's campaign to become Maryland's governor at an event yesterday afternoon in Forestville.

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters officially declared that its 8,000-strong Maryland union will support O'Malley's bid to win the Democratic primary next year and to unseat Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

An O'Malley campaign news release pointed out that nearly 5,000 of the union's members live in Washington's Maryland suburbs, the backyard of the mayor's Democratic challenger, Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. Last month, O'Malley received the endorsement of 1199 SEIU United Health Care Workers East.

A firefighters union in Montgomery County, IAFF Local 1664, recently endorsed Duncan.
