Disclosure No. 1: Outdoors writers are an odd bunch. Doesn't matter if they're a hook-and-bullet traditionalist, a feather-and-fern newcomer or a foot-in-each-camp hybrid.

Disclosure No. 2: I love to laugh, and few people make me laugh more than that ole hybrid, Ron Judd (he puts a "C." between Ron and Judd, as if he needs to differentiate himself from some other outdoors writer named Ron Judd).

Judd writes about the outdoors for The Seattle Times. In his spare time, he also attends the Olympics - winter and summer - for the paper. Someday, I'm sure, he will find a way to pitch a tent in figure skating's kiss-and-cry area.

His new book, The Roof-Rack Chronicles ($15.95, Sasquatch Books), wrestles with vexing issues such as RV ownership, family camping, gear obsession and neoprene chest waders ("Honey, do these make me look fat?").

I'm guessing you'll see a bit of yourself in his musings: "Most of us learned quickly that it's foolish to lay claim to conquering nature. The best you can ever hope to do is walk away with both your eyebrows and all of your limbs and declare it a tie. That, in itself, is the ultimate victory."

Or, to put it in another Judd-ian way: "To err is human. To err outside often results in a helicopter evacuation."
