Severna Park Middle in Anne Arundel County, Ridgely Middle in Baltimore County and Clarksville Middle in Howard County were among six schools named Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by state education officials yesterday.

Other schools recognized in Maryland were Thomas Pyle Middle in Montgomery County, Northern Middle in Garrett County and Bainbridge Elementary in Cecil County.

The distinction was based on the 2005 Maryland School Assessment, and schools were selected based on one of two criteria. Honored schools must either have scored in the top 10 percent of all schools on the MSA or must serve economically disadvantage communities whose test scores show improvements over three years. Their scores must be in the top 40 percent of all schools in the state.

The statewide honor comes with several perks, including a $2,000 cash award from state Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick and an opportunity to apply for a $1,500 classroom grant.
