State fire officials said yesterday that they had not determined a cause for a three-alarm blaze Tuesday night that claimed the lives of 24 thoroughbred horses at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton. Losses were put at nearly $2 million. pg 1a

Ahold investigation expanded

Prosecutors expanded their investigation of accounting fraud at the U.S. unit of Royal Ahold NV, the Dutch owner of supermarket chains, including Giant Food, by bringing charges against seven more people who worked for the company's vendors. The seven are accused of signing audit confirmation letters that enabled Ahold's U.S. Foodservice unit to overstate its earnings and assets. pg 1d
