Two drivers who Howard County police say were racing on a state road in Laurel collided early yesterday, sending one of them and an unbelted passenger to the hospital.

Police said that Cachino Lewis, 20, of the 9000 block of Old Scaggsville Road in Laurel, tried to pass the other car using the right shoulder of eastbound Route 216 at Baltimore Avenue.

While attempting to pass, police said, Lewis lost control of the Nissan Maxima and crossed in front of an Acura Legend, clipping its right front. The Maxima crossed the grass median and the westbound lanes before overturning in a ditch and ejecting Lewis' passenger, Latosha Patten, 20, of the 1000 block of Philip Powers Drive in Laurel, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Patten remained in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday afternoon. Lewis was treated and released.

The driver of the Legend, Guy Gobble, 21, of the 1200 block of Snowden Place in Laurel, and a passenger, Wesley Reed, 20, of the same block, were not injured.

Police are investigating the matter.
