Fashion designer Lindsay Raspi never took a sewing lesson. She taught herself to sew because she had to alter every bit of clothing she bought.

"I just got tired of paying an extra $30 or $40 to get something to fit," says Raspi, who is 5 feet 1 inch tall and a size 0. "From that I realized if I can hem a pair of pants, I can make a skirt."
