Brady gives up girls team

October 29, 2005|By PAT O'MALLEY | PAT O'MALLEY,SUN REPORTER

Annapolis High School's John Brady, the only basketball coach in Maryland history to coach the boys and girls teams at the same time, has stepped down as the girls coach after five seasons to spend more time watching his daughter play.

Brady will continue to coach the boys team. Jeff Starr, who has been an assistant to Brady with both the boys and girls teams, will coach the girls.

"My daughter [Erin] is a senior this year and plays basketball at Mount de Sales, and I want to be available to see her play as much as I possibly can," Brady said. "That's the only reason I did step down. Jeff is a qualified guy, and I feel good about leaving the program in his hands."

Brady, who begins his 29th season as the boys coach next month, is 590-112 at Annapolis, including a state title in 1990. "I enjoy coaching and don't have any plans to hang it up in the near future," he said.
