Call me a lightweight.

I love ultralight tackle, whether it's jigging for striped bass on the Chesapeake Bay or flipping for panfish on a piece of Northwest Branch in Silver Spring.

Bass Pro Shops has a great reel that's perfect for little fish in little water: the Micro Lite Supreme ($39.99).

Trick it out with 4-pound test and hook it up to a 4-foot-8, ultralight Ugly Stick for some fun.

The easy-casting reel will put your lure where you want it. The retrieve is smooth, thanks to six bearings and a gear ratio of 5.2:1. The anti-reverse is responsive and the drag is more than adequate.

Thoughtfully, Bass Pro has included an extra aluminum spool.

If you want to sharpen your skills to match your gear, read Ultralight Spin-Fishing, by Vermont guide Peter F. Cammann (The Countryman Press, $14.95).

In just 152 pages, he walks readers through gear, tactics and techniques for fresh and salt water.

Call it a little "light" reading.
