This woman has marriage on her mind

October 27, 2005|By LINELL SMITH | LINELL SMITH,SUN REPORTER

Novelist Maryann Reid could imagine no better wedding than the one she recently arranged for a group of 10 couples -- folks who already had children and long-term commitments, but no marriage certificates.

The event, held last month in Brooklyn, N.Y., illustrated the themes of her newest novel, Marry Your Baby Daddy (St. Martin's Griffin, $12.95), while also confronting what she has called "black America's dirty little secret": that nearly 70 percent of African-Americans are born outside of wedlock.

If you go Maryann Reid will lecture and sign books at 7 tonight in the Alice Parham Ballroom, McKeldin Center at Morgan State University, 1700 E. Cold Spring Lane. Call 443-885-3470
