A man released in June from federal prison after serving time for narcotics violations was fatally shot Sunday night during a robbery less than two blocks from his home in the Brooklyn section of South Baltimore, city police said.

Anthony D. Heck, 31, of the 800 block of Herndon Court, and a friend whose name was not released, were sitting on the front steps of a house in the 4100 block of Cleve Court about 11:45 p.m. when two men, one with a handgun, demanded money, said Agent Donny Moses, a police department spokesman.

After the gunman robbed Heck's friend of $10, Heck turned to flee down an alley and was shot in the chest. Heck's friend was not harmed, Moses said.

Heck died an hour later at Harbor Hospital, Moses said. Details of the victim's federal conviction were not available.

Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7LOCKUP is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest or indictment of the gunman or accomplice.
