School-expectations forum scheduled

The superintendent of schools, Howard County Board of Education and Maryland Association of Boards of Education will sponsor a forum for parents, community leaders and staff members to formulate and discuss their expectations for Howard County schools.

The forum, "What Counts?" will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 1 at Homewood Center, directly behind the Board of Education building, 10910 Route 108, in Ellicott City.

Session to examine planning for college

The Howard County Gifted and Talented Education Program will offer a Parent Academy from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Faun Court, Columbia.

A presentation, "College Counseling: Begin with the End in Mind," will offer strategies for academic planning, from elementary school through high school, for admission into competitive colleges and universities.

Parents of elementary, middle, and high school students are welcome.

Career Academies open houses set

The Howard County Board of Education's Office of Career and Technology Education will hold open houses to introduce its Career Academies (formerly called the Tech Magnet Program) to parents and students, grades seven to 11.

The open houses will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Applications and Research Laboratory, 10920 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Multimedia Arts & Technology academies and Business and Entrepreneurship academies, Nov. 15.

Biotechnology and Health Services academies, Nov. 16.

Architecture and Engineering academies; Energy, Power, and Transportation academies (including a new Automotive Technology Academy), Nov. 17.

Information on school-based academies will also be available.

School board to meet Thursday

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public work session, a regularly scheduled meeting and two public hearings Thursday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The public work session, focusing on the work of the board, will be held at 3 p.m.
