Brush up on English conversation at library

The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, will offer an English Conversation Club, for speakers for whom English is a second or third language, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 1 and on the first Tuesday of each month.

Participants will have an opportunity to practice speaking and understanding in a small-group setting. Registration is required.

The Howard County Library's Chess Club will be at the Savage branch at 4 p.m. Nov. 2, 16 and 30. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play. Registration is not needed.

The library will offer "Games Galore," a program of favorite games such as Scrabble, Life, Monopoly and Clue, at 4 p.m. Nov. 1, 15 and 29. Players can take their own games to share. Registration is not needed.

Johanna Klema, staff attorney with the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau and member of the Civil Justice Network, will discuss planning an estate at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the library. Registration is required.

Holiday Craft Fair scheduled Nov. 13

The South Laurel Recreation Council's Holiday Craft Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at Deerfield Run Elementary School and community center, 13000 Laurel-Bowie Road, in Laurel.

Artisans and artists will display, demonstrate and accept commissions for unique gifts and decorations. Door prizes, refreshments, bake sales and lunch are planned.

Those who attend can also register for the council's holiday workshops for children, teens and adults.

Admission and parking are free.

Applications are being accepted from artists and artisans until all spaces for sellers at the juried craft show are filled.

PACE -- The Savage Senior Center will offer an eight-week PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) class Wednesday and Friday afternoons. The class uses gentle activities, performed in sitting or standing positions, to increase joint flexibility, range of motion and maintain muscle strength. Final wishes -- Johanna Klema, staff attorney with the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau and a member of the Civil Justice Network, will discuss ways senior citizens can ensure that their final wishes are carried out. Fall classes -- South Laurel Recreation Council is offering classes for all ages. Fitness, dance, craft and homemaking classes are offered. Classes are held in elementary schools in the south Laurel area or at the Montpelier Neighborhood Park on Route 197. 301-776-2805.

Ghosts walk -- Howard County Tourism Inc. has launched its second season of the "Ghost Walks in Historic Savage Mill" tour during which historic characters haunt shops at the mill at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights this month and next.
