`Taste of Islam' to be held at McDaniel Wednesday

McDaniel College's Multicultural Student Association will hold its fifth annual "Taste of Islam" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Forum on the Westminster campus.

The event, which includes dinner and a presentation on the meaning of Ramadan, is open to the public. Advance reservations are recommended.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. After dark, they break the fast with a traditional meal. The month is a time of reflection, prayer and faith.

This year during Ramadan, Muslims will remember the tens of thousands who died in the recent earthquake in Pakistan.

Tickets are $7 for McDaniel students and children age 12 and younger; $12 for college faculty and staff members; and $20 for others. Part of the proceeds will be donated to McDaniel's Katrina Relief Fund.

Board of Education to hold meeting, work session Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold an administrative meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices in Westminster.

A work session, "Analysis of Data," will be held at 2 p.m.

The regular meeting agenda will be posted on the school system's Web site,

Meetings will be broadcast live on CETV, Channel 21 on Adelphia cable TV, and repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the following Thursday, and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Alumnus Roberts, a CNN anchor, to speak Thursday at McDaniel

McDaniel College will present a talk by CNN Headline News anchor and McDaniel alumnus Thomas Roberts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in McDaniel Lounge.

His topic will be "Trust Me: From the Hill to CNN's Anchor Desk."

The 1994 graduate will discuss his career in journalism and the two weeks he spent in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

He joined CNN in 2001 and co-anchored the network's coverage of the war in Iraq and the Columbia space shuttle tragedy in February 2003.

Roberts has received honors and awards including a 2002 Emmy nomination and a 2001 Edward R. Murrow Award for a documentary he produced.

The event is free to the public.

Westminster Montessori school finishes building field house

The Montessori School of Westminster has completed construction of the Utz Field House, a 3,600-square-foot steel building that will be used for physical education, music and dance.

The field house was built through the efforts of staff members, the school board and school families, and with corporate donations.
