Fall festival at Baugher's this month

Baugher's Orchard is holding a fall festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends through this month at 1236 Baugher Road, off Route 140 west.

Wagon rides to the pumpkin patch and apple picking are offered, weather permitting. Visitors can call Baugher's Pick-Your-Own Hotline at 410-857-0111 to verify availability of produce.

Other activities include a petting zoo and playground, pony rides, face painting, a make-your-own scarecrow area and pumpkin painting. A small fee is charged for some events.

Food and Baugher's produce will be available for purchase.

An old-fashioned apple butter boil will be held today to show how apple butter is made.

A Civil War re-enactment and costume contest will be held Oct. 29 and 30. The costume contest will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, with prizes in four age groups: infant to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. A giant pumpkin filled with toys will be raffled off. Mrs. Clown will entertain both weekends.

Re-enactors from Company I, First Maryland Volunteer Infantry Confederate States of America, will camp on the grounds next weekend to offer a look at battlefield life.

Troops will offer demonstrations and discussions each day, on topics including battlefield meals, the ways re-enactors depict being wounded and dying, a reading of wartime poetry and a battlefield church service.

Baugher's Orchard is open daily through Christmas Eve.

Mount Zion to hold breakfast, auction

Mount Zion United Methodist Church will hold a pancake breakfast and silent auction from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the church hall, 3006 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg.

The menu includes regular and buckwheat pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, applesauce and beverages.

The cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children younger than 6. Carryouts and baked goods will be available.

The auction will feature products and services including autographed sports memorabilia and dinners at area restaurants.

A Secret Santa Room will be available for children to shop for inexpensive Christmas gifts.

Westminster library to offer `Ghost Walk'

Westminster branch library, 50 E. Main St., will offer:

"Ghost Walk" at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday for ages 10 to adult (younger than 14 must have parental permission; younger than 10 must be with an adult). After a slide show about ghosts and legends around the county, the group will stroll through downtown Westminster to visit reputed haunts. Registration is required.

"Creative Dance for Young Children" at 4 p.m. Tuesday for ages 3 to 7. The Westminster Ballet and State of the Arts Center will lead in this program of interactive song and creative movement.

Book Club for adults at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 to discuss The Touch by Colleen McCullough.

Church plans parking lot event Oct. 30

Grace United Methodist Church will hold a Trunk or Treat event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 on the church parking lot, 4618 Black Rock Road, Upperco.

The event will feature a hay ride, a petting zoo, a straw maze, face painting, food and candy. Families are welcome.

Regional Parent Fair to be held Nov. 10

Spring Garden Elementary School will host a Regional Parent Fair from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 10.

The keynote speaker will be Marina Harrison from the Maryland State Department of Education. She will discuss parents as the first teachers of character education.

Parents are asked to contact a school in the North Carroll region for a registration form.

Library to hold book club, eBay class

North Carroll branch library, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, will offer:

The North Carroll Book Club for adults at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow to discuss Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

"eBay 101: Introduction to Buying and Selling on eBay" for adults at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow. Auction Safari, eBay education specialist, will show the ins and outs of this online auction service.

"Homeschoolers Hour: Weird Science" for ages 7 to 10 at 1:30 p.m. Thursday for a literature-based educational program.

"Don't Fall Down the Septic Hole" at 7 p.m. Thursday for adults. A Prettyboy Watershed Alliance expert will discuss how septic systems work, how to maintain and care for them, and help protect the environment.

Hampstead Marine finishes boot camp

Marine Pvt. Andrew J. Shifflett recently completed 12 weeks of boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is the son of Lois E. and Ken W. Shifflett of Hampstead.
