Retirement liability grows

Maryland has promised its current and future retirees $20 billion in health care benefits, a staggering figure that could put leaders in Annapolis under intense pressure to divert as much as $1.9 billion a year from other programs, according to a report due out Monday. pg 1a

Md. jobless rate declines

Maryland employers and would-be employees had a particularly good month in September, according to figures from the Department of Human Resources. Some 6,200 jobs were added, helping to lower the unemployment rate to 4.1 percent. The state, which had a jobless rate of 4.4 percent in August, recorded one of the largest improvements in the nation last month. pg 10c
