Historic hero: In 1974, York Road was facing troubled times. Aging businesses, abandoned buildings, and crime plagued the area and its residents. Community leader Frank Knott decided to do something about it: He invited residents, business owners, churches and Baltimore City officials to form a partnership to revitalize York Road from 39th Street north to the city limits. Together, they created the York Road Planning Area Committee, Inc. (YRPAC).

Celebrity sighting: On Sept. 27, 2004, actors John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix attended a pre-film party for "Ladder 49" (shot in Baltimore) in the Belvedere Square parking lot, along with local luminaries Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Mayor Martin O'Malley and Baltimore Fire Chief William J. Goodwin Jr. The event raised $175,000 for the Baltimore City Fire Foundation.

Best way to spend a Saturday: In addition to their regular wine-by-the-glass menu, Grand Cru brings in an estate owner, winemaker or agent of a winery or brewery every Saturday from 1-5 p.m. for special tastings free of charge.
