Howard man, 20, killed, 3 hurt in Elkridge crash

A 20-year-old Howard County man was killed and three of his friends seriously injured early yesterday when the driver lost control of the car at a curve on Landing Road in Elkridge and struck a tree.

Police said the accident was alcohol-related.

Arthur Edward Garland III, who attended Howard High School, died on impact. Garland was sitting in the back seat and not wearing a seatbelt, police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said.

The driver, Jennafer Leigh Mangan, 20, of Elkridge, was taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and released about 11 a.m.

Brennan Scott Reid and Anthony Mitchell Mason, both 20 and 2003 graduates of Howard High, also were taken to Shock Trauma. Mason was listed in serious condition yesterday afternoon. Reid of Ellicott City was treated and released.

Reid's mother, Crissy Reid, said that the men were friends from high school and that they used to work with Mangan at the Bennigan's at Snowden River Parkway and Route 108 in Columbia. Crissy Reid said that the she believed the group was headed home when the accident occurred about 2 a.m.
