South County center plans October events

South County Senior Center will be offering these activities this month:

Friday, 9:30 a.m., nine-ball partners tournament. Partners will be drawn at 9:30 a.m., with start at 9:45 a.m.

Monday, 1 p.m., session on "What's This Thing Called Reiki?"

Tuesday, 10 a.m., the Garden Club will visit Bittersweet Nursery in Davidsonville.

Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to noon, annual craft sale.

Oct. 24, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., reiki masters will offer a reiki clinic with 20-minute sessions. Appointments required.

Oct. 26, 12:30 p.m., Halloween party and Monster Mash. Bring grandchildren for trick-or-treating.

Oct. 27, the county Health Department will offer flu shots. Donation of $20, or bring Medicare Part B card.

Oct. 28, 10 a.m., van trip to City Dock in Annapolis. Lunch on your own. Registration. 410-222-1927.

Pascal Senior Center announces trips

Pascal Senior Center has announced trips for the year, including:

Nov. 3, reopening of the Walters Art Museum's Charles Street building.

Dec. 1, Christmas from the Heart, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, Lancaster, Pa.

Dec. 8-9, Williamsburg, Va., at Christmastime, and the holiday lights display in Newport News Park.

Dec. 15, concert of songs and carols at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hanover, Pa. Lunch at Hickory Bridge Farm.

Participants must be age 55 or older and members of the center. Information: 410-222- 6682.

Seniors sought to teach life skills

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is seeking "volunteer grandparents" to work with children 15 to 20 hours a week. Activities include mentoring, tutoring and giving advice on life skills, with extra attention for children in Head Start, special education, shelters or family-support centers.

Other activities include reading stories, listening to children, working with puzzles, and helping children learn to feed themselves and set a table, as well as learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, free transportation, sick leave, lunches and medical exams.
