BOYS

Josh Savage, Joppatowne

SPORT FOOTBALL

STATS -- The junior plays wing back in the team's run-oriented offense and has rushed for 240 yards and two touchdowns through the Mariners' first four games. Savage also has been a factor on defense, playing inside and outside linebacker despite being undersized for the positions (5 feet 8 and 140 pounds).

SIDELINES -- Savage does the little things that don't show up on the stat sheet. Coach Bill Waibel said Savage is a strong blocker and tackler who "is a real cerebral kid and has never missed an assignment."

GIRLS

SPORT SOCCER

Melissa Gomes, John Carroll

STATS -- Gomes was moved to striker early in the season and has played a big role in No. 2 John Carroll's nine-game winning streak. Last week, she had a goal and an assist as the Patriots rolled to a 6-0 victory over No. 7 C. Milton Wright. Gomes followed that with assists on both goals in John Carroll's 2-1 win over No. 9 McDonogh.

SIDELINES -- The junior is a versatile player who was a second-team All-County pick last year. She played a key role in the Patriots winning the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title last fall, and has been one of John Carroll's top scorers this season.
