Capt. Salem Avery House -- Capt. Salem Avery House, operated and maintained by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society, is seeking volunteers ages 16 and older. Volunteers will serve as docents and greeters, children's activities leaders, researchers, photographers, educators, and many other interesting duties. 410-867-4486, or captain avery@prodigy.net.

Bay Foundation -- Chesapeake Bay Foundation is in need of volunteers age 18 and older to work in its Annapolis headquarters. 410-482-2151, or htuckfield@cbf.org.

Food Bank -- Volunteers are being sought by the Maryland Food Bank to assist at its Halethorpe facility in sorting and boxing food for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Evening and Saturday shifts will be available in November. 410-737-8282, ext. 232, or craig@mdfoodbank.org.

South County -- South County Assistance Network needs volunteers to assist from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursdays and Saturdays to stock shelves, bag food and donate food and other items for its pantry at St. James Church in Lothian. 4301-261-5265.

Cancer education -- Free support programs, education and other resources to benefit young adults with cancer and their family and friends, is provided by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. The fund needs volunteers ages 18 and older, with good communications skills, to serve as members of the speakers bureau to give at least three presentations a year to educate about cancer and the fund's services. Blood donations -- Anne Arundel Medical Center, 2001 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, is urgently seeking donations of blood, particularly O positive. The blood bank is open weekday mornings and early afternoons. For an appointment call 443-481-4215.

Light House Shelter -- Light House Shelter, an emergency facility in Annapolis, needs volunteers to assist in its transitional housing program. Volunteers age 18 and older prepare and serve dinner and are encouraged to stay and share meals with guests. 410-263-1835.

Katrina volunteers -- The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers to be sent to states affected by Hurricane Katrina. The tour is three weeks. Conditions will be difficult, with little or no air conditioning, 18-hour days and no days off. One-day mandatory training sessions are required. Salvation Army -- The Salvation Army needs volunteers to serve lunch to the homeless from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at 511 S. Crain Highway, Glen Burnie. Volunteers are also needed from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the Boys and Girls Club to assist with homework. 410-768-0477.

HIV/AIDS volunteer program -- HIV/AIDS Volunteer Enrichment Network is seeking daytime volunteers to take people to and from appointments. Evening volunteers are needed for transportation to group support meetings. 410-224-2437 or have nannapolis.org.

Tutors -- Tutors and chaperone volunteers are being sought by the Community Center, 623 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park. Tutors are needed in math and English for middle school after-school programs. Chaperones are requested for Friday and Saturday night Youth Center events. 410-647-5843.

Arts center -- Chesapeake Center for Creative Arts, 194 Hammonds Lane, is seeking volunteers age 16 and older to work in the box office, serve as ushers and perform other duties. 410-636-6597.

Ballet -- Ballet Theatre of Maryland, at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase St., Annapolis, is looking for volunteers to assist in fundraising and administration. An event coordinator and manager also are being sought. 410-263-8289.

Nurse volunteer -- A volunteer nurse is being sought by Pascal Senior Center to take blood pressure readings from 9 a.m. to noon the second Monday of the month. The center is at 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. 410-222-6680.

Foster parents -- The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services is seeking foster parents to offer temporary homes for children in crisis awaiting reunions with their families, placement with relatives or adoption. 410-222-7825.

Kinder Farm Park -- Volunteers are needed to assist in weeding, gardening, animal care, blacksmithing and the annual Fall Harvest Fair this month. 410-222-6115, or rpwy mal16@mail.aacounty.org.

Tutors -- Tutors age 18 and older are sought by Advancement Via Individual Determination to work with groups of three to four students in grades six, seven and 10. Volunteers need to commit to at least two hours a week for a semester, during school hours. 410-222-5135.
