Spencer G. Dobson Jr., 83, BGE draftsman, choir member

Spencer G. Dobson Jr., a retired Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. draftsman and former Baltimore resident, died of cancer Tuesday at the home of a nephew in Newport News, Va. He was 83.

Mr. Dobson was born in Baltimore and raised on Lafayette Avenue. He was a 1940 graduate of Douglass High School and served during World War II with an Army infantry unit in Europe, attaining the rank of lieutenant.

He attended what is now Morgan State University and worked for many years as a BGE draftsman until his 2000 retirement.

A tenor, Mr. Dobson sang with the Morris Queen Chorale and Grand Hymns Choir. He was a member of St. Mark's Institutional Baptist Church on Bentalou Street and its choir.

Mr. Dobson had lived in Newport News since 2003, and was formerly a longtime Mosher Street resident. He enjoyed bowling and playing pinochle.

His wife of 12 years, the former Geraldine Jenkins, died in 2002. His earlier marriage to the former Della Mickle ended in divorce.

Services will be held at noon tomorrow at Union Baptist Church, 1219 Druid Hill Ave., where his brother, the Rev. Vernon Dobson, is pastor.

Mr. Dobson is also survived by a son, Spencer G. Dobson III of Baltimore; three daughters, Lydia A. Wilson of Baltimore, Della A. Mooring of Randallstown and Denise Dobson-McDonald of Glenn Dale; another brother, Irvin Dobson; and a sister, Anna Dobson Ware, both of Baltimore; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
