What if a knife company with more than 80 years in the business downsized?

You'd have the Great Neck Saw Co.'s Sheffield line of miniature multi-tools and utility knives.

The 12-in-1 multi-tool does a lot of the same things as the big guys made by Leatherman and Gerber. It has pliers and knives and screwdrivers, but folds down to 2 1/2 inches and weighs less than 2 ounces, perfect for the corner of a fanny pack, a fishing vest pocket or tackle box. The utility knife accepts all standard blades and squeezes down into just as tiny a package as its diminutive partner. Both come with lifetime guarantees.

Great Neck Saw also offers a mini-flashlight that runs on two AA batteries, but I'd pass on that. Its outer surface is slippery when wet and the beam it generates isn't nearly as impressive as flashlights in the same category. On the plus side, the back end of the flashlight is a hex-shape, which keeps it from rolling off a table.

The Sheffield line is available at many chain hardware and auto parts stores, or you can find an outlet online at You can find a mini-tool/knife combination package for about $16 on many online bargain sites.
