Cat's meow

The lowdown -- Bringing their hybrid musical styles to the Eight by Ten Club on Saturday is Australia's The Cat Empire. With stylistic influences ranging from salsa to jazz to rock, The Cat Empire, already popular abroad, hopes to capitalize on the buzz generated during its spring tour.

Foreign funk

The lowdown -- Japanese rock favorites Mono will stop in Wednesday at The Talking Head as part of its North American tour with labelmates Bellini. Mono's sound is lush yet light, and some of its songs exceed 15 minutes, making for an interesting live set.

Rap battle

The lowdown -- With more than 40 acts competing for the title of the top Mid-Atlantic MC, the One Mic MC Battle should be quite a spectacle. Participants freestyle rap against their opponent, and the crowd and selected judges choose the winner. This year's "battle" will feature celebrity guest judges. Tonight's event at 5 Seasons, attracts record industry insiders hoping to scout out the next big talent.

If you go -- The 5 Seasons, 830 Guilford Ave., will host the One Mic MC Battle tonight at 8. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, and there is a $20 registration fee for those intending to participate.
