Spalding upsets No. 4 Archbishop Curley, 4-1, in soccer

Spalding coach Ed Kestler knew his team had the talent, and during a meeting last week, he challenged his team to step up. The Cavaliers responded with a 4-1 victory over No. 4 Archbishop Curley yesterday in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference boys soccer game.

Spalding (6-6, 3-6) took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Mike O'Connell and Josh Danza. Pat Harner and Pat Peroutka each scored in the second half.

Chris Wright scored the lone goal for the Friars, who fell to 8-6-1 and 4-4-1.

Girls soccer

No. 10 John Carroll 6, No. 7 C. Milton Wright 0 -- Patriots freshman Jen Eikenberg equaled her season total for goals with three against the host Mustangs (5-1). She also added an assist as John Carroll improved to 9-3.

Field hockey

St. Mary's 2, No. 3 St. Paul's 0 -- Bridget Hirsch scored the first goal on a pass from Alex Kuntz in the first half and Becca Devlin added an insurance goal four minutes into the second on an assist from Liz Carpenter as the host Saints (4-4-2) upset the Gators (5-2).

No. 4 South River 2, Southern 0 -- Abigail McNair scored twice in the first half as the Seahawks (8-2) defeated the visiting Bulldogs. Adrienne Hunt assisted on both scores.


River Hill 78, Glenelg 69 -- Todd Amburn and Justin Fabling each scored 21 points to help the Hawks (11-0) win the Howard County regular-season championship at Hobbit's Glen Golf Club.
