Montessori school to hold open house

The Montessori School of Westminster will hold an open house for prospective students and their parents from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Families may tour the school and meet with the staff to learn about the Montessori philosophy.

The school is at 1005 Montessori Drive, off Hughes Shop Road near Pleasant Valley.

School officials plan town meeting

School board President Gary Bauer and Superintendent Charles I. Ecker will conduct a town meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Parr's Ridge Elementary School, 202 Watersville Road, Mount Airy.

The purpose of the meeting is to create a dialogue with parents and the community. The officials invite the public to voice concerns or ask questions about education.

Bilingual training program will meet

The Bilingual Education Training for All Teachers Program at McDaniel College will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in McDaniel Lounge.

Catherine Collier will discuss "Equity for All: Balancing Diversity and Equality," about how to meet the need for education professionals with specialized training to work with culturally diverse students.

Annual fair focuses on college education

The 28th annual Carroll County Continuing Education Fair will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road.

Participants can meet with representatives from more than 120 colleges and post-secondary training programs. In addition, three college preparation workshops will be held in the auditorium:

6:40 p.m.: "The Community College Experience," by Candace Edwards, coordinator of admissions at Carroll Community College.

7:20 p.m.: "The Nuts and Bolts of the Financial Aid Process," by Ellie Geiman, assistant director of financial aid at McDaniel College.

8 p.m.: "Tips and Tricks of the College Application Process - What Do Colleges Look For?" by Martha O'Connell, dean of admissions and vice president of enrollment at McDaniel.

McDaniel offers 3 TESOL classes

McDaniel College is offering three courses in the spring designed for both TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and non-TESOL instructors and administrators.

Participants will gain practical skills and improve their theoretical knowledge. Classes meet seven times, with the remainder of the work done online.

All courses meet Maryland TESOL requirements and may be included in the master's in curriculum and instruction program at McDaniel.

Each three-credit course is $750.

Carroll County Elementary Schools -- will not hold kindergarten classes Friday so teachers can hold parent conferences. 410-751-3020.

Carroll County Public Schools -- offer the External Diploma Program, a self-paced alternative to the GED test. Information sessions on the program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and 9 a.m. Oct. 12 at Student Support Services/Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 55 N. Court St., Suite G27, Westminster.
