`Fright Film' festival to show four movies

The Carroll County Arts Council has chosen a line-up of horror-themed films for its October "Fright Film" festival, to be held at 7 p.m. every Friday this month at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster.

Scheduled films are:

Oct. 7: Young Frankenstein. A neurosurgeon, played by Gene Wilder, inherits the castle of his grandfather, Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. He discovers the mad doctor's book that describes "reanimation" and he, too, tries his hand at brain transplants, with comical results.

Oct. 14: Edward Scissorhands. Johnny Depp stars in the story of a soulful creature who has scissors where he should have hands because his inventor died before he was complete.

Oct. 21: Carrie. A shy girl who is taunted by her classmates gets revenge on them at the prom. Sissy Spacek and John Travolta star in the film based on the Stephen King novel.

Oct. 28: The Blob. A mysterious creature from another planet, resembling a giant blob of jelly, takes over a small town. Steve McQueen is the hero.

Tickets are $5 and $4 for members, seniors 60 and older and children 12 and younger. Tickets may be reserved in advance with a major credit card.

McDaniel College to present `Quake'

McDaniel College Theatre will present Quake at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday on the understage in Alumni Hall on the Westminster campus.

Quake, an award-winning play by Melanie Marnich, tells the story of Lucy, who is looking for the love of her life. The journey takes her across America and through hilarious and eccentric relationships. On her way, Lucy is distracted by an obsession with "That Woman," a notoriously brilliant serial killer and astrophysicist who coaches her on the trip.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students.

Concert to benefit Carroll safe house

The Carroll County Family & Children's Services and Human Services Programs will sponsor a concert to benefit the Carroll County Domestic Violence Safe House.

"With One Voice: An Evening of Fine Music" will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster. Performers will include the Old Line Statesmen Barbershop Chorus, the Children's Chorus of Carroll County, the Masterworks Chorale, the McDaniel Gospel Choir, the McDaniel Concert Choir, the Brass Ensemble and Amy Kwon.

Tickets are $20.

Boys Choir of Kenya to sing next Sunday

McDaniel College and the Carroll County Arts Council will present the Boys Choir of Kenya at 4 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster. The concert is free to the public.
