JOHN (Jack) W. Brown, Jr., 87, died on September 27, 2005, at his residence at Blakehurst, 1055 West Joppa Rd, Towson, MD, after a long illness. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Brown spent his early years in Roanoke, VA and Chevy Chase, MD. He graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of Maryland Law School in Baltimore after five years of service as an officer in the US Navy from 1941-1946. Mr. Brown began his business career as a title examiner for the Maryland Title Guarantee Company in 1947. In 1960, the Maryland Title Guarantee Co. merged with the Title Guarantee Co. and he was elected a Vice President later succeeding to the position of Executive Vice President and Director in 1968. In 1974, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of the Title Guarantee Co. where he remained until his retirement in 1981. He was very active in the real estate business community for his entire career, serving on local and national title insurance industry boards: The Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland, Safeco Title Insurance Company of California, Inc., Charles H. Steffey, Inc., and the Real Estate Board of Greater Baltimore. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Merchants Club. Mr. Brown was a member of the Maryland and Baltimore City Bar Associations and a member of the Board of Governors of the American Land Title Association. Following his retirement, Mr. Brown and his wife traveled throughout the world over a period of 8 years, visiting 45 countries. He was a member of the Baltimore Country Club for over 40 years and was an avid golfer. Mr. Brown lived in Baltimore City and County for 60 years. Survivors include his wife, the former Josephine Key Griffith of Berryville, VA, whom he married in 1942, three sons, John W. Brown III of Essex Fells, NJ; Lt. Gen (Ret.), Daniel G. Brown of Fairfax, VA; T. Walker Brown of Charlotte, NC and five grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Brown will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, October 1, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Allegheny Avenue, Towson, MD. Burial service will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 P.M. in the Hopkins Room at Blakehurst.
