Quick, affordable trips to Israel

Deal of the Week

September 25, 2005|By TONI STROUD SALAMA

You could easily spend a month in Israel and not see it all, so rich are its attractions. But there aren't many of us who have the time for a monthlong tour, much less the funding. A happy compromise might be the "8 Day Affordable Israel" guided tour from Gate 1 Travel. It handles all the details, hits the high points, then leaves you some free days for exploring on your own or adding optional day tours. Rates vary by departure date.

Basic deal: $2,844 per couple, assuming a Dec. 6 departure.

Includes: round-trip air Chicago-Tel Aviv; $273/person air taxes; airport-hotel transfers; four nights at the Ariel Hotel in Jerusalem; two nights at the Center Hotel in Tel Aviv; breakfast each morning; daylong motor-coach tour of Jerusalem; daylong motor-coach tour of Galilee-Nazareth-Haifa, ending in Tel Aviv.

Contact: 800-682-3333; gate1.com.

For those who've always dreamed of traveling to Israel, Gate 1's package puts a trip within reach of many. Optional tours to Masada and the Dead Sea ($94/couple), of Jerusalem on foot ($58/couple) or by night ($78/couple), and of Tel Aviv and Jaffa ($58/couple) can fill in the remainder of the itinerary for those who don't want the time to explore on their own. Gate 1 provides English-speaking local guides throughout the trip.
