Red Sox update After losing to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox fell out of first place in the American League East for the first time in more than two months, and trail the New York Yankees by one game after the Orioles' loss in New York last night. The Red Sox have had trouble with the Orioles all season, losing eight of 15 games against their division rival. Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who leads the AL with 46 homers and 140 RBIs, is making a late push for AL MVP. In 21 September games, Ortiz has hit .338 with 10 home runs and 21 RBIs. Twenty-seven of Ortiz's homers have come on the road, breaking Ted Williams' team record of 26 road homers in 1957. An All-Star this season, Clement, tomorrow's starter, has gone from the Red Sox ace to a question mark recently. He is coming off his shortest outing of the season, giving up seven earned runs in 1 1/3 innings on Sunday against Oakland. He has lost three straight starts.
