The Bye week

September 23, 2005|By KEN MURRAY

At 0-2, the Ravens can use it. At 2-0, the Washington Redskins would rather play on.

The NFL's bye week hits the Baltimore-Washington area on Sunday. Both the Ravens and the Redskins will be inactive in the NFL's first week of byes.

According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, a key factor in the Ravens' bye is a conflict with the Orioles, who play at Camden Yards on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox. In the Redskins' case, the Presidents Cup golf tournament will conclude Sunday.

"That's how it worked out," Aiello said. "The region will receive other NFL games on TV."

Aiello said the decision on when a team draws a bye is "man-made with computer assistance."
