September 22, 2005

On September 16, 2005, ELINORVICTORIA PRUDENCE ELY, 95, died in Sunbury Community Hospital of respiratory failure. She had been a resident of the Hospital's Nursing Home Facility for the last two years. Previously she resided at 160 Arch Street, Sunbury. She was born in Mt. Pleasant Mills, Synder County, Pennsylvania, on November 6, 1909, the oldest of the seven children of the late Rev. George K. and Jennie (Boyer) Ely. Her father came from Berks County and her mother from Snyder County. They met in Mt. Pleasant Mills where her parents had the general store and she was organist of St. John's Reformed Church, which was part of her Father's first pastorate. He served the congregation from 1906 until 1910, at which time he moved with his family to the Sciota Charge in the Poconos, where the next four children were born. She lived with her parents all but six of the years of her life before they passed away, beginning with her father's first pastorate in Mt. Pleasant Mills and concluding with his eighth and final pastorate at Trinity Reformed Church, Baltimore, where, at age 92, he rounded out 60 years as an active Christian minister. She was very close to her parents, serving as her mother's right hand person in the kitchen for 45 years and chauffeuring her father, beginning when she became the first child in the family to drive a car and especially in later years when, at an advanced age, her father preferred not to drive. Elinor was educated in the public schools in Pennsylvania and entered Hood College, Frederick, Maryland, graduating 1932 with a B.A. degree. Also, she took graduate courses at York School of Business. She was a social worker for 37 years, first in Frederick County, Maryland, and later in Baltimore County. She was active in her father's churches, at various times singing in the choir, teaching the Ladies' Sunday School Bible class, participating in the Church Bowling League, and in one congregation serving as Sunday School Superintendent. She enjoyed being a member of the Garden Club, bowling, cooking, and playing the piano by ear. She is survived by one sister, Sarah, of Sunbury; one sister, Eunice Ely Smith, of Crownsville, Maryland; one brother, Donald, of Sunbury; and the following nieces and nephews: Kathleen Ely Lybarger of Selinsgrove; Yvonne Ely Renaud of Camp Hill; Stephen Ely of West Newbury, Massachusetts; Sandra Smith Kastel of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Cindy Smith Leist fo Melbourne, Florida; and Philip Smith of Crownsville, Maryland. Also surviving are several grandnieces and grandnephews: Olivia Lybarger and Luke Lybarger of Selinsgrove; James Renaud of Camp Hill; Stacey Kastel of Quesenberry of Suffolk, Virginia; David Kastel of Oak Ridge, North Carolina; and Paul Montgomery Felix of Melbourne, Florida. The funeral will be held on Saturday, September 24 at the First Reformed Church, Second and Chestnut Streets, Sunbury at 2 P.M., with the Rev. Jonathan Albright officiating. Burial will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Friends will be received from 12 noon on Saturday until the time of the funeral service. Funeral arrangements are being made by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State Street, Sunbury.
