Mike Preston's Report Card

Titan's 25, Ravens 10

Ravens Gameday

September 19, 2005|By MIKE PRESTON

Quarterback: Anthony Wright played reasonably well when he had time or wasn't stumbling over his own feet. But the interception returned for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter basically sealed the Ravens' loss. Ballet lessons should be a required course for all Ravens quarterbacks.

GRADE: D

Offensive line: Four of the five starters are older than 30, and they play like it. The group has never been strong at pass blocking, but now they're weak at run blocking. They don't do anything well.Wright, Kyle Boller, Dan Marino? It makes no difference who is the starting quarterback.

GRADE: F

Running backs: These guys should get an incomplete grade. Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor deserve better, but they can't even get to the line of scrimmage. Lewis has to become a pass catcher, and Taylor always falls forward for yards regardless if it's a pass or run.

GRADE: C

Receivers: The offensive line is so sorry that tight end Todd Heap has become a pass blocker. The Ravens can't get him downfield because there isn't enough time. Derrick Mason had eight catches for 60 yards, and Heap had five for 56. Clarence Moore needs to be benched.

GRADE: C+

Defensive Line: End Tony Weaver and tackles Kelly Gregg and Maake Kemoeatu were getting some excellent penetration. They controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game. Gregg had seven tackles and Kemoeatu two, but that doesn't show their impact on the game.

GRADE: B

Linebackers: This group got caught blitzing a lot in the first half, and when they weren't blitzing, they got caught out of position on short passes across the middle. Ray Lewis had nine tackles, but most came downfield. Outside linebacker Adalius Thomas played the run well.

GRADE: C

Secondary: This group got stronger as the game went on because it became more settled once the Ravens cut down on the blitzes. Twice in two weeks cornerback Chris McAlister has had his hands on passes but failed to make the interception. More teams are picking on nickel back Deion Sanders than a year ago.

GRADE: C+

Special teams: The Ravens got nothing out of their punt return team, returning three for 5 yards. Matt Stover was short on several kickoffs but did have the tackle of the game, preventing a kickoff return for a touchdown. The Ravens had problems getting players on and off the field, and one of their punts was blocked.

GRADE: D
