Today's state games

Catholic (0-2) at McDaniel (2-0)

Time: 1 p.m.

Radio: 1470 AM

Series: McDaniel leads, 8-2

Last week: McDaniel beat Seton Hill, 28-9; Augustana beat Catholic, 52-26.

Outlook: McDaniel continued to excel last week with backup QB Tom Wenrich running the offense in place of injured starter Brad Baer, who is expected to be out three to five weeks with a shoulder injury. The Green Terror moved up one spot this week to No. 23 in the Division III poll.

Johns Hopkins (2-0) at Carnegie Mellon (2-0)

Time: 1 p.m.

Series: Carnegie Mellon leads, 6--4

Last week: Hopkins beat Randolph-Macon, 24-0; Carnegie Mellon beat Grove City, 20-16.

Outlook: The Blue Jays enter this important early season test leading the nation's Division III teams in the fewest points allowed in two games (7). Look for this game to be a battle of two strong defenses with Hopkins having an edge on offense. Carnegie Mellon has held its first two opponents to an average of 57.5 yards rushing per game.

Livingstone (0-3) at Bowie State (3-0)

Time: 1 p.m.

Series: Livingstone leads, 16-5

Last week: Bowie State beat Morgan State, 35-21; Virginia Union beat Livingstone, 32-15.

Outlook: The unbeaten Bulldogs pulled off the upset of the week locally, much to the satisfaction of coach Mike Lynn who is a former Morgan assistant. However, the victory by Division II Bowie over I-AA Morgan doesn't help the Bulldogs in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association East standings where Bowie is 0-0 entering today's first league game.

Montclair State (0-1) at Frostburg State (0-1)

Time: 1 p.m.

Series: Montclair State leads, 4-0

Last week: Frostburg lost to Apprentice, 21-3; Montclair State had a bye.

Outlook: Frostburg has a losing record at home (10-11) since 2000. Montclair is frustrated after losing in double overtime two weeks ago to I-AA Iona, 21-14.

Salisbury (2-0) at Chris. Newport (1-1)

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Radio: 1320 AM

Series: Salisbury leads, 2-1

Last week: Salisbury beat SUNY-Brockport, 35-30; Christopher Newport beat Maryville, 53-2.

Outlook: Salisbury has waited 10 months for this shot at the Captains who came in last year and pulled off a 35-24 upset over the then-No. 5 Sea Gulls in the opening round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The loss at Sea Gulls Stadium marred a 10-0 regular season and wiped out Salisbury's hopes for at least a berth in the national semifinals.

Savannah State (0-2) vs. Morgan State (0-2)

What: Proctor & Gamble Ohio Classic

Site: Cleveland Browns Stadium

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Radio: 88.9 FM

Series: Morgan leads, 3-0

Last week: Morgan lost to Bowie State, 35-21; Savannah State lost to Elon, 48-14.

Outlook: Now that Morgan has fallen to two state rivals, the Bears will try to regroup in the massive confines of Browns Stadium. The Savannah State Tigers may provide a break for the Bears who have dominated the three games in the series, including a 45-14 romp two years ago.

New Hampshire (1-0) at Towson (2-0)

Time: 3 p.m.

Radio: 89.7 FM

Series: UNH leads, 3-0

Last week: Towson beat Lock Haven, 70-0; UNH was idle

Outlook: It's time for Towson to find out exactly where it matches up this season with the real I-AA powers in the nation and Atlantic 10 Conference. New Hampshire is ranked No. 3 nationally entering this A-10 opener for both teams. The Wildcats smashed the Tigers, 62-24, last season and are currently celebrating their highest national ranking ever.
