Lautenberg, Jr., Joseph Walter

JOSEPH WALTER LAUTENBERGER, JR., 1933-2005, long time resident of Lafayette and Walnut Creek, CA., passed away at his home early Saturday morning, September 10, 2005, after a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Lautenberger was born in 1933 to Grace Burke and Joseph Walter Lautenberger in Baltimore, Maryland where he lived as a young boy and attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute graduating in 1950. He then attended Cornell University graduating in 1954 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. At Cornell he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity and a member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honors society. He married Joan Osborne Lautenberger in 1954 and headed west to California where he went to work for Shell Oil. Co. His professional career started when Mr. Lautenberger worked for the Air Force at the wind tunnels at Moffet Field. His career as an engineer then took him to Malsbary Manufacturing and Rheam Manufacturing before he received his MBA from U.C. Berkeley in 1964. After completing his MBA Mr. Lautenberger worked for the California Savings and Loan as a research analyst then for Touche Ross as a consultant and then finally at the U.S. Postal Service where he worked for 22 years before retiring in 1992. Walt is survived by, his children and their spouses, Joseph Lautenberger and his wife Linda, William Lautenberger and Sharon Treanor, Margaret Koniniec and her husband Steve and Janet Lautenberger. All Mr. Lautenberger's children attended Acalanes High School in Lafayette and continue to live in the Bay Area. He is also survived by his five grand-children, Alex and Diana Lautenberger, Sarah and Christopher Koniniec and Thomas Lautenberger. Walt is also survived by his ex-wife Joan Lautenberger and his companion Gisela Hendrickson. As a 34 year resident of Lafayette Walt was active in the community. After moving to Rossmoor in 2000 he became active in the community there as well serving as the President of Mutual One. Walt was also active in the Episcopal Church, first at St. Stephens in Orinda and then at St. Clement's in Berkeley. Services were held September 15 at St. Clement's Episcopal Church at 2837 Claremont Blvd. in Berkeley, CA.
