In the Howard County arts community, the annual Road to the Arts is as sure a sign of fall as school buses and falling leaves.

Eleven galleries have scheduled receptions this weekend and will feature exhibits of paintings, sculptures, photography and other visual works.

The weekend event, in its 16th year, "is a great way for [galleries] to make people aware of their new exhibits," said Amy Poff, deputy director of the Howard County Arts Council. The council organized the event.

Poff said she hopes art patrons will be encouraged to continue visiting galleries throughout the year.

She said that even if people can't go to events this weekend, "it gives them a sense of the breadth and diversity of visual arts events going on in the county."
