Tip of the week: Countering a job offer

Some people will tell you to always counter the offer, rationalizing that it's the only way to know for sure whether you are getting everything you can out of a hiring manager. I don't agree. Ultimately, both you and the hiring manager have similar goals. The hiring manager wants to find the best candidate for a fair salary. And you want to find the best opportunity for a fair salary. The point of salary negotiation should be about finding that fair number. It's not about the company taking advantage of you or you taking advantage of it. All parties should walk away feeling that their needs were met. So if the initial offer is fair, by all means accept. But if your research shows - and your gut tells you - that the offer is not adequate, don't be afraid to counter.
