Two male detainees who were stabbed numerous times at the state-run Baltimore City Detention Center on Friday remained hospitalized yesterday, authorities said.

Barbara A. Cooper, a spokeswoman for pretrial detention services, said the two were attacked by several other detainees about 7:50 p.m. as about two dozen detainees were being escorted to their cells from the detention center's gym.

She said she did not have information about the number of people who were involved in the attack or what precipitated it.

The two men who were injured -- ages 23 and 20 -- had multiple "puncture wounds," Cooper said. She said several weapons were recovered but that she had no information about the types of weapons used.

Correctional officers intervened when the fracas broke out and quickly restored control, Cooper said.

The two detainees who were injured were transported by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Hospital and remained there yesterday, Cooper said.
