Conservancy open house is Saturday

As part of the county's Farm-City Celebration, the Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant will hold a free open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Farm, 10520 Old Frederick Road, in Woodstock.

Tours of the new Gudelsky Environmental Education Center and gardens, guided nature walks, children's activities and a gallery show, "Farms Never to be Forgotten," by Shyami Codippily Murphy, are planned. Naturalists will discuss future classes at the conservancy, and a master gardener plant sale is planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants sought for River Hill yard sale

Residents interested in participating in the River Hill Neighborhood Yard Sale, to be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, should contact the village office by tomorrow.

A charity collection truck will be at the River Hill pool from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to collect items not sold. Household items that require installation and metal desks will not be accepted. Electrical items must be in good working order.

At the library:

The Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, will hold its Mother-Daughter Book Club, for mothers and daughters ages 11 and older, at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The group will discuss The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. Registration is not necessary. The library will offer "Libraries Mean Business: The ABCs of Internet Selling," at 7 p.m. Sept. 19. Participants will learn the basics of using the Web as a marketplace from representatives of the Small Business Administration.

A Knitting Circle will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 22. Take supplies. Registration is not needed.

The Graphic Novel Club, for those ages 11 to 17, will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the library. Participants will discuss favorite comic books and examine their drawing styles. Registration is not necessary.

A program on "Preserving Family Keepsakes," including documents, photographs and heirloom fabrics, will be offered at 7 p.m. Sept. 29. Anita Carrico of the Enoch Pratt Free Library and quilt expert Rosemary Clark will conduct the program, which is part of the Howard County Farm-City Celebration. Heart of Maryland:

The Heart of Maryland Barbershop Chorus will give two performances at River Hill High School in Clarksville for its annual fundraising concerts at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The program will also feature a number of quartets, including the Ringers, All in Accord and the River Hill High School barbershop quartet. Tickets are $12 to $18. Joe Chilcoat, 410-788-8695.
