For girls, a chance to see what 1850s life was like

Girls in fourth, fifth and sixth grades can dress in pinafores and play games and sports of the 1850s at the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18. The program will be repeated on Sept. 25.

Participants can experience activities typical of a day in the life of a young girl attending the institute, a once renowned girls school in Ellicott Mills -- now Ellicott City.

The cost is $10 a person. Reservations are required.

SAT, PSAT prep courses offered at two high schools

SAT and PSAT prep courses will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 21, 28 and Oct. 5 at Mount Hebron High School, and Thursday and Sept. 22, 29 and Oct. 6 at Howard High School.

Tuition is $175 a course, which includes materials. A portion of the fee will benefit the school.

Baseball alumni game:

Howard baseball coach Rich Jenkins is putting together an alumni game, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 1. The game will be played before the Lions' homecoming football game against Centennial. All former players and coaches are invited. 410- 384-9330.

Gardening advice:

The Miller branch library is offering drop-in question-and-answer sessions with master gardeners from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays this month. 410-313-1950.

40th birthday:

Current and former members of the Mount Hebron community are invited to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of Mount Hebron High School with a tailgate party, starting at 4 p.m. Friday, before the second game of the football season. Festivities, which include food, entertainment and games, will be held on the Mount Hebron baseball field. Teen relationships:

Students and parents will meet separately and together for discussions about teen relationships at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. The free program is for those ages 11 to 15. Dinner is included. Registration starts Thursday. 410-313-1950.
