Mariners update

In last place in the American League West, Seattle was on the verge of entering this series against the Orioles coming off a three-game road sweep of the Oakland Athletics before its bullpen experienced a meltdown Wednesday. Handed a four-run, ninth-inning lead, normally reliable closer Eddie Guardado blew the save, and the A's prevailed. Their playoff chances gone for some time, the Mariners have begun a youth movement in the second half under former Orioles manager Mike Hargrove. The central figure in that movement is Sunday's starter, Hernandez, a hard-throwing right-hander from Venezuela. Hernandez, 19, has allowed just 31 hits and 10 walks in 51 innings, striking out 50. The Orioles split a four-game series at Safeco Field in mid-July. Rafael Palmeiro got his 3,000th hit in that series, but neither he nor Sammy Sosa will be with the Orioles on this trip.
